GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF MACHINE

HS-IBM-2 is a high speed inner box making machine working with cardboard from a reel. The speed of the machine can be varied between ≈700 and ≈950 r.p.m. corresponding to the equal number of boxes per minute. The machine is well encased but yet easily accessible for cardboard reel exchange and service. The machine is driven by a 3 HP motor at 2800 r.p.m. The speed of the motor is varied by means of a VFD unit installed in the control panel of the machine having a regulator on the operator panel on the front door of the machine.

It is convenient to consider the steps of this process in three stages:

SKILLET FEEDING

In its standard form, the feeding head is supplied for skillets which have been scored in a previous process. This is usually undertaken as part of the printing and cutting operation. A feed head unit feeds skillets from the magazine in which they are stacked, so that they may be picked up by the driving chain of the later stages. The skillets are removed from the magazine by a feeder having a notch (groove) to withdraw one skillet at a time through a feed gate, until they are picked up by a pair of feed rollers which pass the skillet to subsequent sections of the machine. The skillets at this point are traveling one behind the other with a small gap between each one.

GLUING AND FOLDING

The flat skillets from the feed section are passed between the lower edge of the main forming bar and a block-chain, which carries them along the bar while they are being glued and folded. Pressure between the block-chain and the forming bar is maintained by a pressure-bar under the block chain to ensure that the skillets are kept square at all times. The pressure-bar consists of a series of spring loaded steel blocks, the individual pressure on which may be varied by means of adjusting screws beneath.

On first entering this section, scored skillets pass over a glue-pot where glue is applied by means of an applicator wheel. The glue-pot and applicator wheel is heated, the temperature being maintained by a visual indicating thermostat. After gluing, the first (side) fold of the skillet is made by means of two folding guides that are mounted on each side of the forming bar. This bends the skillets into a U-shape and envelopes the bar on three sides. The next and final folds are made by means of two discs which are free to rotate. These are mounted on each side above the bar at an angle of about 45°. At this point, the remaining flaps of the skillets are folded over one after the other to make the glue joint that totally encloses the bar. The skillets are then in the form of an outer box and are ready for drying.

At this point of its length, the forming bar has a cross section similar to the inside of a finished outer box. Along the lower face of the bar are a series of rollers, the purpose of which is to reduce friction between the skillets and the forming bar and minimize the pressure on the block-chain with consequent damage to the cardboard skillet

FORMING AND DRYING

This section applies pressure to the glued joint and maintains the form of the outer box while the glue is setting. It is achieved by the action of a driving wheel with side flanges, the width between which is equal to the outside size of the outer box. A suitable pressure is applied to the glued joint by the wheel pressing on the boxes passing beneath it.
